Today’s blog post is a bit more educational on the roots of fashion than just me showing you how to style outfits. However, this post is something that I’ve been super eager to write for a while now. A few weeks back, I started an online fashion business course to keep me learning about the fashion industry. Last week’s main focus point was “Fashion In Society”. It got me wondering, what does society, as producers and consumers, think of fashion.

First let’s go over the three different kinds of fashion:

1. Refers to the textile industry, when one says “she works in fashion“.
2. Refers to the prevailing dress style during a particular time, when one says “flare jeans are in fashion“.
3. Refers to the prevailing dress style during a particular time IN GENERAL, when one says “artificial intelligence technology is a new fashion”. Meaning it doesn’t deal with style or clothes specifially.

Being fashionable is to adopt new styles as they say become popular, and to differentiate oneself from those who stick to a conservative appearance. The French author Honoré de Balzac identifies fashion as a principle of distinction of the self. Let’s take a look at some of the styles of iconic fashionistas.

Firstly, street style. Many of my favorite looks come from actors, singers, and models just walking down the street. Some of my favorite fashion inspirations are the people in these pictures, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Blake Lively, and so many more icons. This is the perfect example of “Fashion is a way to look alike AND stand out”. On the red carpet, many people have stylists that pick and choose how they want you to look. On the street is where many celebrities can express their personal style yet also stay on trend.

Red carpet! Even though I mentioned most celebrities have a. stylist to guide them, this does not mean personal style doesn’t shine through, especially at the Met Gala. First, I chose some basic styles, for example Taylor Hill’s dress from the Met Gala. At an event like the Met Gala, celebrities are expected to bring it. Some may say Hill’s dress was basic, but I think it’s elegant. Another basic but elegant style comes from Lily-Rose Depp. She looked so regal in this dress that she was called “Hollywood royalty”. Other people like SZA and Lily Collins brought very unique styles to the Met Gala, with exciting hair pieces that made their looks eye-catching. This is what fashion is all about, being able to create a piece that aligns with a theme or trend, but also allows the person to stand out.

The last fashion looks I want to talk about, are runway fashion. This is probably what most people think of if they are new to to learning about the fashion industry. Probably because it’s what many models do and the most iconic pieces are strutted down runways. The most interesting thing about runway fashion is you see some of the most known brands putting out pieces you would only see on something like a runway, but also pieces you could see a celebrity walking down the street in. Runway fashion brings every type of fashion, style, or trend you could imagine and puts it all together in an amazing show for critics and lovers to watch.

All different types of fashion, whether it’s streetwear, red carpet glam, or runway looks are equally as exciting. Each person, celebrity, model, and brand have different taste that they put out into the world. This is why fashion is so intriguing to me. I love seeing how trends come and go and sometimes come again. However, it’s most interesting to see how each person tailors their outfit to fit in and stand out at the same exact time.
