How To: Build Your Wardrobe

It seems as though quarantine has brought out the creativity in all of us, so if you’ve been putting off trying a new style/aesthetic, this is the time. I figured I would show you the foundation for a perfect wardrobe and the must haves in my closet! I’d like to think there are a few key clothing items that everyone should own that can be a good basis for every outfit. Of course, you can then layer on more pieces and add fabulous accessories that make the look even more fashionable. However, as long as you have these items in your closet, you can’t go wrong.

1.DENIM

I always recommend keeping different kinds of denim in your closet, whether it’s blue, black, or white, they all come in handy when styling different looks. If you think you don’t have the budget for good quality denim, think again. A variety of denim can be found everywhere, in fact the most unique pairs of jeans I’ve found have been from thrift stores or Etsy shops and for a really good price! From left to right: Target (Wild Fable), Kohl’s, Express.

2. WRAP TOPS

I’ve always been a huge fan of wrap tops/front-tie tops! They aren’t too overwhelming which is perfect for printed/colored bottoms but also can be paired with classic denim to spotlight the top. This top from Shein actually can be styled multiple ways as well which is always a plus in my book. You can tie it in the front or wrap it around the back and tie. I chose the second option for the look I styled and I absolutely loved it!

I chose the white denim bottoms from Express to show off the wrap top. I decided to keep it basic and not too overpowering to clearly show the importance of a good foundation when it comes to building your wardrobe. Once you have a good basis, you can evolve and create more looks using the same few pieces. I was thinking this look was very city chic so I accessorized with pearls and statement sunglasses. I recommend investing in a good pair of statement sunglasses in your wardrobe, they come in handy quite often if you’re looking to upgrade your style.

3. TURTLENECKS

Alright, I know it’s only August but I had to bring out the turtlenecks for today’s post. Turtlenecks aren’t for everyone and you may be questioning why I included them. They’re the perfect item to layer with and with silk tops being in trend right now, I love the way they look with the white turtleneck. Turtlenecks also pair really nicely with denim which shows you just how easy it is to assemble a wardrobe with just a few items.

4. BIKER SHORTS & TEES

Graphic tees are an ESSENTIAL in everyone’s closet, oversized or cropped, you’re gonna need a few of these. To match with some tees, biker shorts have been in trend for quite some time now. I was a little skeptical at first, but over time I warmed up to them. Now, I’m completely obsessed and love the way graphic tees pair so well with them. Normally I would pair an oversized tee but today I decided to wear my cropped NYC tee. Of course, you can’t complete this look without a pair of sneakers and some gold chains to accessorize.

Now is the perfect time to rebuild/expand your wardrobe and dazzle everyone with your fashionable taste once you head back to school, work, etc. I made this how to guide so you could get a feel at my closet essentials and how you can style them! Once you have a good foundation, it’s so easy to broaden your horizons and get out of your comfort zone. I’m thinking of making this a two part blog post, the first being creating a base for your wardrobe with must haves, and the second being how you can then grow your style and start getting creative by expanding your wardrobe.

xoxo, megs
