How To Style: Flannels

Flannels are one of the most popular items of clothing to wear in the fall, however I’ve noticed as I’ve grown up that I’ve distanced myself from them in fear of looking “too basic”. When I started to get requests for a blog post about styling fall basics, I realized styling flannels would be a good challenge. I decided to style flannels in a simple yet effective way, so you too can realize that you’ll never look “too basic” in a fall flannel.

1. CLASSIC FLANNEL LOOK

The first outfit I styled was a pretty simple look, wide-pant jeans, a basic white tee, and a red flannel. Some may see this look as “too basic” but I think it’s the right amount of basic and fashionable. I accessorized with layering gold necklaces and some gold hoops. Of course, I had to add my favorite shoes ever, the white chunky New Balance sneaks, but I loved how the blue in the shoes matched with my denim. Overall, I think this look is a great way to break out the flannels you’ve kept in the back of your closet. Everyone can pull it off because it’s a very safe look, and although it may look plain, this gives you lots of room to make the outfit personalized to your style with accessories & shoes.

2. COMFY FLANNEL LOOK

I decided to add one look that was very casual and perfect for that day where you’d like stay comfortable but make it look like you put in just a little bit more effort. I have many days like this when the temperatures drop really low and you have to put on a bunch of layers just to stay warm. So, the perfect way to achieve that kind of look is pairing sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a flannel coat! 3 things that aren’t expensive and you probably already have somewhere in your closet. I also like how this look is again, able to be personalized to your own style (picking out a certain pair of sweats or shoes you like). It’s not an exact formula but just inspiration to get you back into those flannels.

3. DRESSY FLANNEL LOOK

This last look is what I’m going to call the “dressy flannel look” even though all it really consists of is a pair of black jeans, a sweater, and another flannel. 3 things you again, probably have at home already! I really liked how the red sweater brought out the red detailing in the flannel and overall I think the colors of this outfit matched very well together. I accessorized with a pearl necklace and belt with my fake Docs as my choice of footwear. This look is the one I go for if I’m doing something that requires a little bit more effort than usual, but I still want to rock a trendy fall flannel!

That wraps up all THREE looks! I styled a classic, comfy, and dressy look for whatever occasion or event you want to wear a flannel to! They’re the perfect clothing item for fall and I truly don’t think there will be a year they will go out go style since they’re such a statement piece during autumn. I hope you consider grabbing and styling those flannels if you didn’t want to before, and if you needed some inspiration, you found some!

xoxo, megs
