Styling my own looks always puts a smile on my face but styling someone else? That excites me beyond words. When my friends ask to borrow clothes or ask for help on how to style a piece they just picked up at the store, I feel so giddy. However today, my friend Andrea allowed me to step into her closet and style four looks using her clothes and her style.
The reason I was so excited to style Andrea was that I knew she had a very specific and fun personal style that was going to be so fun to work with. Andrea gets a lot of her clothes second-hand from thrift stores and closet sales, which not only gives her a lot of incredibly fun statement pieces but it’s also great for the environment. Andrea gave me full creative control over this styling process but I wanted to make sure these looks still resembled her personal sense of style. From my perspective of her fashion, that meant lots of mixing colors, patterns, and materials. I definitely created looks that were out of the box and not necessarily your everyday outfit, but that was what made it so fun. I’m so excited for you all to read this post and I hope to turn it into a series, so if you’d like to be styled next, reach out!
- LEATHER IN JUNE
I didn’t have a specific strategy or process when styling these looks, but I did notice a trend in Andrea’s closet: statement pieces. Andrea has acquired quite the collection of amazing statement items, which obviously made this so much more exciting for me. For this look, I started with this summery blue and green maxi dress that ended right in the middle of her calf, which I loved. With this specific dress length, the shoes could still be highlighted.
Since shoes were being highlighted as well, I wasn’t sure which shoe to go with. Since it is summer, I thought about going for an open-toed shoe….but then my eyes landed on these incredible chunky leather loafers. Without a jacket, I wasn’t sure if the look was going to come together with just being the dress and shoes. So, as I was looking around for some sort of black jacket to complement the shoes, Andrea handed me an oversized leather jacket. Seriously, the leather and the summery dress were like a match made in heaven. When Andrea put on the entire look my jaw dropped, I seriously would have never considered adding leather to such a colorful summer dress. I loved it.
Andrea also had these green and blue statement-ish earrings that I obviously had to finish the look with. I am seriously obsessed with this outfit and I want to wear it myself.
2. LIME GREEN HIPPIE BABY
For the next look, I started with the pants. Like I mentioned, lots of statement pieces in Andrea’s closet (no complaints here!) I loved the style and color of the pants but I didn’t know what top to pair with them…until I found this lime green button up. I really think Andrea was setting me up for success because everything was going together so smoothly. Although the green in the top and the bottoms were different, it was like two puzzle pieces that just ended up matching together perfectly.
As for shoes, I wanted to try an open-toe for this look, and my eyes gravitated towards these chunky black sandals. Honestly, you’re probably thinking to yourself that these looks are so out there that you wouldn’t know where to wear them. For this one, I actually can see it being a beach look (possibly a cover-up or dinner outfit?) I mean think about it, the flared pants are perfect for the beach. You could just wear the bikini top and go or throw on the button-up if it’s windy! Anyways, that’s just my two cents on why you can always wear the out-of-the-box outfit. Thank you for your time.
3. CASUAL IN COLOR
Although we were on a roll with the more unique outfits, Andrea told me this look was the most “her”, and I wholeheartedly agree. She said this was the look she would probably wear out the most often which makes sense as it’s the most casual. However, I still wanted to make sure it wasn’t boring (because one can be both casual and colorful). I started with this really interesting bright blue top Andrea had trouble styling. I then grabbed a pair of denim jeans and went from there. To add some different colors I went with this moss green button-up and threw it over top, along with some bright red converse for shoes.
I think what I enjoy most about this look is the colors, more specifically the balance between the bright and muted tones. There are obvious bright colors in the blue tank and red shoes, and the mute colors in the green jacket and tan hat. Although there is a mess of colors involved in this look, it somehow gets pulled off. I think it has a lot to do with Andrea’s confidence and ability to pull off almost anything. You are almost convinced by her that the outfit is cool because she looks cool in it.
4. EYES ON THE COWGIRL
Oh wow, I can’t tell you how excited I am to talk about this last look. Now let’s take a guess as to what I started this look with? Honestly, I don’t even remember. I know Andrea really wanted to style this amazing vest she picked up, but I know my eyes were stuck on these dang red cowgirl boots!! It was like trying to decide between listening to Taylor or Kanye…two artists you didn’t think should be listened to at the same time, but then realized it’s okay to appreciate both musical geniuses. Shameless Spotify playlist promo for my Taylor/Kanye fans. Anyways what I was trying to prove was that the vest and the boots were two things I didn’t assume could go together. I thought the look would be too overwhelming with too many incredible pieces fighting for the spotlight, but boy was I wrong! I separated the two pieces with denim shorts to calm it down a little bit, and this look was truly a showstopper!
In terms of outfit details, I finished this look with these orange chunky sunglasses. I know what you’re thinking, ANOTHER STATEMENT PIECE? Yes, go big or go home baby. The orange matched with the orange in the vest which was just another reason for them to be included in the look. Overall, I am completely in love with everything about this outfit so eyes on the cowgirl everyone!!!!!
Wow, I am so impressed with these looks honestly. A huge, huge thank you to Andrea for letting me step into her closet and style some fabulous looks for her. It was so easy to do when she already had such amazing style and pieces to work with. I haven’t had this much fun with a blog post in a long time, so I’d love to do it again. Local peeps, if you’d like to be styled next, I would love to turn this into a series, so let me know! This summer is going to be insane for Miss Megs 😉
